The French parliament has approved an inquiry into sexual abuse within the film industry. It's a significant move towards addressing and tackling issues of misconduct in cinema.

The French parliament decided on Thursday to establish a commission to look into sexual and gender-based violence in cinema and other cultural fields following multiple recent accusations.

The National Assembly, or lower house, gave its unanimous approval to establish the commission requested by actor Judith Godreche in a speech to the upper house, the Senate, in February. The 52-year-old actor and director has played a significant role in France's MeToo movement after accusing directors Benoit Jacquot and Jacques Doillon of sexual assault when she was a teenager, with both directors denying the allegations.
