The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has drawn criticism from the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) for his recent remarks concerning the operations of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

Bawumia said that the GRA was harassing companies while posing as a tax collecting agency.
During a discussion with representatives of the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the manifesto committee made these statements in an attempt to get feedback for the 2024 elections.
Dr. Bawumia connected the persistent problem to the GRA's practice of setting officers unachievable targets, which leads them to impose disproportionate taxes on well-established companies.
The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana Executive Secretary, Samson Asaki Awingobit, issued a warning in a statement on Monday, March 25, 2024, stating that they would not be persuaded by Dr. Bawumia's tactics a third time.
The Vice President should apologize to the business community for not keeping his word, the Association urged.
The Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his supporters are being told by Ghanaian importers and exporters that their antics will not be tolerated a third time. The Association declared, "We will evaluate him and others on the basis of their performance, not on false promises made during the campaign that will ultimately prove to be another scam.
They emphasized that they would not fall for Dr. Bawumia's broken promises in order to win support for the elections that will take place in December.
It stated that "We rather expect the Vice President to apologize to the business community for reneging on his campaign promises and not this last-minute populist-driven show-off."
The Association further emphasized that Dr. Bawumia has not spoken out on this or any other important issue for the last six years, failing to force the GRA to reevaluate its revenue collection strategies. Many enterprises have left the nation as a result of this inaction.
"The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana can best describe the Vice President’s recent stand as a populist attempt to redeem his image in the eyes of the business community, considering the fact that he as a Vice president kept mute on this issue among other issues for the past 6 years failing to prompt the Ghana Revenue Authority on the need to change their modus of tax collection which has forced many businesses out of the country," it stated.
Nonetheless, the GRA workers' union (GRAWU) voiced their disapproval with a comment purportedly made by Dr. Bawumia, stating that the
GRA is intimidating taxpayers.
