Chukwuma Onoh, 31, sadly committed suicide in Abia State, southeast Nigeria, allegedly after losing N2.5 million in an internet wager.
Unemployed Nigerian graduate Chukwuma Onoh kills himself after losing N2.5 million in a bet.
In an attempt to pay off a N1.2 million loan he had borrowed from friends to support his N1.3 million wager, Onoh earlier that day messaged a man he thought to be his boss on WhatsApp.
Onoh conveyed his desperate circumstances in a touching note, saying, "The only thing I can do is take my own life because I can't bear the embarrassment. My lack of employment has made me a gambler, and I'm at the point where I would commit suicide to pay off my debt if I don't get a job."Since then, this WhatsApp message has gone viral on social media, exposing the seriousness of his situation.
Onoh disclosed the full depth of his financial difficulties in a later message, writing, "I used N2,500,000 to place a bet and N1.2 m is not my own and if I don't pay up today." By the time you read this, I will have passed away. I want to acquire a sniper right now, while I type this message."
The alleged boss responded to his request for financial support by saying he couldn't assist right now. He suggested that Onoh ask his creditors to be patient with him instead so that he could pay off the amount in installments.
Sadly, Onoh announced on his Facebook page on Tuesday that "Today is my last day on earth!" in a troubling statement. "I (am) going to meet my maker," the speaker said without giving a reason. He continued by expressing his gratitude to a few friends and colleagues, saying, "My spirit is with you all."Onoh consumed a poisonous chemical, most likely Sniper, less than two hours after publishing this message. Friends hurried him to Madonna Hospital Umuahia. Doctors and nurses tried to revive him, but the decision was made that he was dead.
at an interview with premiumtimesng.com, Onoh's friend Chisom Ibeako expressed her sorrow at seeing him suffer a horrible death at the hospital. She emphasized that even though Onoh had a history of lending a hand to those in need, he kept his problems from his friends and family. Startled by the abrupt change in circumstances, Ibeako lamented not seeing Onoh's Facebook post in time to act.
To make matters more complicated, Onoh was apparently unemployed despite having graduated from university.
