Abraham Asare, a 52-year-old former employee of Ghana Water
Company Limited (GWCL), was arrested by the police at Larteh-Akuapem, Eastern
Region, in 2022.
Asare now faces charges of stealing 23 pieces of 8-inch
ductile iron pipes, which are essential parts of an active water distribution
mainline that meets the demands of households, after former GWCL staff members
were detained for stealing iron pipes worth Ghc299K in Larteh-Akuapem,
according to starrfm.com.gh.
On December 12, 2023, at around 6:30 p.m., law enforcement
responded to a distress call and apprehended Asare and his associates. The gang
was putting the pilfered pipes on a KIA vehicle with the license plate ER
587-20.
A single 8-inch ductile iron pipe is expected to cost
roughly GHC 13,000, making the total value of the stolen goods GHC 299,000.
The public relations officer for GWCL in the Eastern Region,
Kwadwo Daase, claims that Asare's detention highlights more significant
difficulties the company is now facing. Among these difficulties are reports of
meters being stolen, metallic chamber coverings being removed, and electricity
cables being stolen from the company's factories.
The GWCL is proactively tackling these issues and making
great efforts to strengthen its infrastructure against illicit activity. The
organization is still dedicated to protecting its assets and making sure the
community receives vital water services without interruption.
Utility service providers in Ghana encounter difficulties in
delivering uninterrupted services to the general public because of theft of the
tools and supplies essential to their efficient functioning. In addition to the
Ghana Water Company Limited, these illegal activities have also victimized the
Electricity Company of Ghana and telecommunications firms.
