The 71-year-old actor Treat Williams, who played the title role in the musical film Hair and the US television series Everwood, passed away in a car accident.

Williams was struck by an SUV turning left in Vermont on Monday, according to the police, and was then thrown from his motorcycle.

He had critical injuries when evacuated to the hospital but was already dead before getting there.

In an almost 50-year career, the actor accumulated over 130 screen credits.

As you may guess, we are stunned and deeply bereaved right now, according to a family statement that Variety magazine published.

"Treat was full of love for his family, life, and craft. He was truly at the top of his game."

Williams' 15-year agent, Barry McPherson, called him "the nicest guy" and "so talented."

McPherson described Williams as "an actor's actor" in People magazine, who also noted that Williams had been "at the heart of Hollywood since the late 1970s."

Williams was a "passionate... creative man" whose "adventurous spirit was infectious," according to actor Wendell Pierce.

Williams made subsequent appearances in Steven Spielberg's 1941 (1979), Once Upon A Time In America (1984), Dead Heat (1988), Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead (1995), and Deep Rising (1998) after his breakthrough performance as hippie George Berger in Hair in 1979.

He was also well-known for his theater talents, playing Danny Zuko in the original Broadway version of Grease and characters in Stephen Sondheim's Follies.

Williams played the widowed Dr. Andy Brown in four US TV serial Ever wood episodes in the early 2000s. He also appeared in Chicago Fire, Blue Bloods, and Chesapeake Shores.

He garnered three Golden Globe nods in the 1980s and was nominated for an Emmy for his performance in the 1996 TV movie The Late Shift.

He was born Richard Treat Williams in Connecticut in 1951, and his wife Pam Van Sant, whom he wed in 1988, is his only surviving family member. Two kids were born to the couple.
